White and Wood Kitchen: Mistakes

Although this is the safest style, we will begin with the details:

  1. Too much wood is a mistake. There should be more white in the kitchen. Also keep in mind that the wood grain on wood-look particleboard is a printed pattern, which sometimes repeats. In the photo below, I highlighted 2 completely identical areas. That does not happen with natural wood. In other words, particleboard is still good, but do not overdo it.
  2. Wood-look tile on the backsplash. If you want both the countertop and backsplash to look like wood, they should be the same material. Otherwise, it will look pathetic.
  3. Combining different woods. The kitchen floor can be wood-look porcelain tile, but the furniture should not have different wood tones.

Cabinet Front Material and Texture

A white kitchen can be matte or glossy, modern or traditional.

In a perfectly clean new kitchen, matte looks cooler, but there is a problem: it will never be perfectly clean. Never. The slightest touch and you can take fingerprints from several feet away. This applies not only to kitchens and not only to white; dark colors are even worse. I took the risk and made a matte gray closet in the entryway. In short, I learned to open and close it only by the handle. I still have to wash it because you cannot train guests.

Every solid matte texture is impractical. With gloss, the lighter it is, the more practical it is.

The base of white cabinet fronts for modern styles is always MDF. The finish on kitchen cabinet fronts can be:

  1. Paint
  2. Acrylic
  3. Laminate
  4. Thermofoil

The main visible difference is the edge. Painted fronts have no visible edge at all, while the others have edges that are more or less noticeable. Considering the significant difference in price, I do not recommend worrying about it. Trust me, after a couple of months you will forget about it and stop noticing it. They can also differ in resistance to heat and moisture (thermofoil suffers), but that also depends on the manufacturer, so it is better to ask wherever you order the kitchen.

For traditional style, solid wood under white enamel is added, usually with routed details.

There are options where the upper cabinets are one color and the lower cabinets another. In the article about small kitchen design, I wrote that cabinets should go to the ceiling. And there is a cool option: white lower cabinets, a wood middle, and white cabinets up to the ceiling. This is a classic combination, and it looks very cool.

Countertop: Wood-Look Laminate or Natural Wood

There only seem to be many countertop options to an inexperienced person. In practice, it will be either laminate over particleboard or natural wood. Cabinet manufacturers will make the first. You have to find the second yourself.

And it is not only about being natural. Real wood can become the special feature of the kitchen. For example, an oak breakfast bar with stylish lights above it is already a designer renovation.

Wood-look:

The options differ in price, and most people choose laminate because this material is also more practical. It is a good choice. If you do not overdo it, wood-look laminate combines well with white and does not look cheap, although it costs very little.

Most importantly, do not even think about choosing laminate that imitates stone, marble, and so on. It looks awful and cheap. Do not say later that you were not warned.

If you touch a stone-look countertop or knock on it, it will feel and sound like wood, which is not good.

If you have the money, you can consider different types of engineered stone or natural stone. There are no strict rules for appearance. Choose what you like best. Acrylic solid surface has an important advantage: it can be made without joints for L-shaped or U-shaped kitchens. The countertop can also be cast with an integrated sink. Just do not make multilevel countertops with a curved transition. That is yesterday, and even yesterday it looked questionable.

If you want stone, you will have to spend the money.

The good news is that white and wood work with every countertop color, from black and gray to any variegated shade. That is not surprising, considering that white light is a combination of the spectrum of all kinds of light, which, as everyone knows, differ only in wavelength. But now we have wandered into physics and optics.

Finishing a White Kitchen

Use glass, tile, or the same material as the countertop. I recommend the first two options. Even in large kitchens, the backsplash is no more than 22 square feet. That means you can choose very expensive, cool tile that will look good and raise the overall level of the entire kitchen without spending a fortune.

I used backsplash tile that cost about $8 per square foot, which is of course terribly expensive, but the total was $150. That is not much money considering how cool it is. The grout should not be white or light at all. It is best to choose a color 2-3 shades darker than the tile itself. Either the exact same wood backsplash or a contrast looks best. Something merely similar is worse.

Wall, Floor, and Ceiling Finishes

The ceiling must be matte white.

The walls depend on the design style, but gray from decorative plaster, paint, or wallpaper will be a very cool addition. It is guaranteed to fit, and white will look even better against it.

There is nothing more to say about wall finishes for a white kitchen. This cool color eats everything. Anything will work.

Color Combinations

We already know that white is the best color and goes with everything, but what does it go with best:

  1. Wood. White combines perfectly with wood specifically. Scandinavian style is built on this.
  2. Patterns. A white kitchen is the perfect background for patterns on backsplash tile, floor tile, or anything else. Weathered patterns work well too.
  3. Bright multicolored spots. For the same reason as patterns, rainbow and simply multicolored accents look cool in a white kitchen.
  4. Gray. White works much better with gray than with black in a kitchen. There is no explanation. Look at the photos.
  5. Dusty mixed colors: mint, pistachio, dusty blue, and so on.
  6. Grass green. White, wood, and grass green have clear associations with nature and freshness. It sounds strange, but it really looks cool.

Glossy lacquered wood, like so many trends, is something old that returned. Combined with a modern white kitchen, it looks very fresh. There is also a collection of kitchens with unusual designs.

Scandinavian and Provence are 2 ideal representatives of modern and traditional kitchen styles where white and wood form the foundation of the entire interior. Compared with complex styles, they look especially good. It is impossible to make a mistake, you do not need to go broke on an engineered- or natural-stone countertop, they are practical and current. Nothing is better.

Minimalism

In minimalism, white comes first, so both the cabinets and finishes can use one color range. Contrasting spots of color in textiles or accessories will make the interior lively and organic. You also need to know how to combine colors. Because minimalism uses a lot of white in the finishes and it is matte there, you definitely need to choose gloss for the furniture. Glossy white and matte white differ enough not to blend together.

White Is the Best Kitchen Color

White is not a color. It is magic. Dirt is not visible on it at all. That may be counterintuitive, but accept it as a fact. You cannot see splashes, fingerprints, grease – anything. In a year, I wiped mine down 2 times. Both times it was already terribly dirty, but you could only see it from a few inches away.

The agony of choosing is over. Glossy white is ideal.

Despite the stereotype that a white interior is hard to care for, the opposite is true. Every kitchen gets equally dirty, but dirt or fingerprints are less noticeable on white surfaces than on bright glossy ones, which need polishing several times a day.

And a few more major advantages of a white kitchen:

  • White goes with every color.
  • White is the safest color. The chance of making a mistake approaches 0.
  • It works with every design style.
  • It will never go out of style or become tiring.

People often have disastrous ideas about their dream interior that turn into tasteless, incompetent designs in practice. Fortunately, when it comes to kitchen color, many people dream specifically about white. And white really is the best color. Do not doubt it.
